Immersive virtual reality (VR) for digital media making: transmediation is key

The rapid evolution of virtual reality (VR) technologies and their adoption for learning opens up new possibilities shifting semiotic content across modes, with underexplored scope transmediating in visual, haptic, auditory ways immersive media literacy practices. This research investigated users’ creative digital designing involving a popular, three-dimensional painting program upper elementary students who used VR head mounted display sensors. analysis attended to how transmediated the same story written, verbal, tracing key themes students’ experience: (i) immersion three-dimensionality, (ii) subjective presence, (iii) sensory illusion, (iv) interactivity motion tracking. Students reassembled shifted narrative content, sometimes seamlessly, while experiencing ambiguity complexity about representation an world. Producing stories modes invited adaptation generative thinking overcome lack equivalence between writing, drawing, modes.
